"Crowded Car"    01/30/02
I reluctantly got into my grandmother’s car along with several of my aunts.  The car was parked among many others in a large grassy lot that appeared to be far from any other signs of civilization.  Two cars were parked beside hers that looked like more recent versions of her car.  Each person in our group either had a Styrofoam container of food or a large suitcase.  I had a Styrofoam container filled with salad which I struggled with because the lid wouldn’t stay closed.  Two of my aunts and I sat in the backseat.  One aunt had a large suitcase that she also stuffed into the backseat.  As I tried to move my legs in order to accommodate her suitcase on the floor, my salad spilled open into another aunt’s container of food and we debated what the toppings on my salad were.

"Family Road Trip"    01/30/02
I was in a bedroom with my father and one of my uncles when they asked if I was ready to leave.  I had been unaware that we were going anywhere, so I asked them where we would be going.  They replied that we were going shopping and then to a carnival, but I complained that I wasn’t ready to leave and that they should have given me more advance notice.  I went to a giant dressing room that was extremely beautiful.  The lighting glowed softly, and the pastel carpet felt very plush beneath my bare feet; I never wanted to leave that room.  I looked for my suitcase containing my clothes because I wanted to change before I left.  I finally left without changing because I couldn't find my suitcase and everyone else was getting impatient.  I was somewhat disappointed when we only went to a giant Staples store.

"Back to the Dorm"    01/30/02
My mother and I walked into my dorm.  All of the rooms were now on one floor, but each hall had it's own number.  I looked for the hall labeled 4 because that is where I thought I lived.  I was confused because I walked to the place where it should have been and noticed that the hall was decorated with black and orange paper.  I realized it was decorated for Halloween, but I wondered why the hall would be decorated like that during the spring semester.  I looked at other halls.  The one next to mine was decorated with pink and blue.  I wanted to live on that hall much more than I wanted to live on the Halloween hall.  I went back to my hall.  It was very hard to find among the maze of different halls.  A giant sheet of paper blocked the entrance to my hall with a note attached saying that it would remain that way.  The note also said not to take the paper down.  A girl moved the paper to the side and walked through, so my mother and I did the same.  Several of my neighbors were outside of their rooms decorating and I said hi to them.  My friend F was also there.  I talked to her for a bit, but I still couldn’t find my room.  I was having trouble deciding whether I lived in room 410 or 412.

"Living in a New Dorm"    01/30/02
I lived in a new dorm in rooms that were all interconnected and which housed multiple other girls.  Each room looked like it belonged in a hotel.  Several of the residents and I were sitting in a group on the floor in my room.  Jillian sat near me as I worried that I was going to have trouble remembering everyone’s name.  One girl handed out paper cards that she had decorated for each person, however she gave one to everyone except me.  I realized that she didn’t know my name.  That didn't really bother me, but I felt very upset and annoyed by the way all of the girls were gossiping.  I retreated to my bedroom where a male friend of mine came to my room and got into bed with me.  He kissed my lips and then bit the skin off them, leaving me shocked that he thought that was appropriate behavior.  I voiced my disappointment, but his only response was a goofy smile.  He fell asleep very quickly, but I remained awake and felt as if I were freezing.  I wrapped the blankets on the bed around us, he put his arms around me, and suddenly I felt very warm.  Although I did not want to leave the warmth of my bed, I felt anxious and couldn't sleep, so I got up and sat at my computer.  Jillian came into the bedroom and we talked about past relationships.  My friend woke up and joined the conversation, but as I mentioned several embarrassing details about some of my past relationships, I worried that my friend would disapprove or would think that I had lied to him before.  I could barely force myself to look at him as I told these stories, however, when I did look at him, I noticed that he seemed shocked and concerned.  I asked if we could talk about something else and then Jillian awkwardly changed the subject.

"Driving Badly"    01/23/02
I sat in a Chevrolet Bronco with my brother sitting in the passenger seat and one of his friends sitting in the back.  We were in a desolate wooded area, leaving a small cottage where we had been staying, which appeared to be the only building nearby.  I was having trouble driving the Bronco because it was a manual transmission, and it seemed as if the breaks weren't working.  I hit a parked car, even though there shouldn't have been any other cars there because there was no one else staying at the cottage with us.  I wondered  whose car it was.  My brother yelled at me and said that he wanted to drive.  I refused to let him drive because his driving terrifies me.  He said that I should at least let his friend drive, but I did not trust his friend.

"Leather Shorts"    01/21/02
One of my male friends and I went shopping at a large department store that was very dark inside and which sold clothes and toys.  My friend and I separated to look at different items.  Later, my friend met me in the women's sleepwear section.  He asked if I didn't have enough pairs of pajamas already, but I said that I did.  He told me that he was going to try a few things on.  I noticed he was holding black leather shorts and a black T-shirt with a red heart on it and wondered why he was trying on such bizarre clothes.  He met me in the toys section after he had tried the clothes on and said that none of the clothes fit, but I wondered if he was saying that because he was embarrassed that he actually tried on leather shorts.  His brother was in the toys section with us.  My friend picked up an Ewok steering wheel cover, which he seemed very excited about.  He said he was going to put it on his car as soon as we left the store.  He mentioned that the store had a stuffed Ewok.  I wanted to buy it, but it was $111 and I thought that was too expensive.  His brother said he wanted to buy a video game called Baby Vampire.  I wondered why a 15 year-old would want a game called Baby Vampire because the title sounded so juvenile to me.  I picked up the game and looked at it.  When I noticed that it was $71, I told my friend's brother that was too expensive and put the game on a high shelf where he couldn't reach it.  A very good-looking older man came up to me in the store and offered to take us home.  He dropped me off at my grandmother's house.  My family was on vacation there for a week and when I arrived I found out that Jillian lived on the third floor of my grandmother's house.  I was looking for my shoes, so I picked up a pair that looked like mine, but Jillian claimed they were hers.  I looked at the shoes more closely and realized that she had taped signs to them.  I left them on the floor and went downstairs.  My relatives were sitting at the dining room table and it looked like they were about to eat Thanksgiving dinner.  My mother was regaling my relatives with a story about me when I was in high school.  My uncle suddenly turned to me and started reliving his high school days when he was on the debate team, but I felt out of place talking to him.

"Rapping Teacher"    01/20/02
I began packing my books into my backpack after one of my classes finished.  A girl from my class asked me if she could borrow the self-help book we had been discussing, so I gave her the book.  She thanked me and left.  I realized that I had stayed in the classroom so long that the next class was already beginning.  The teacher began telling her class the rules, which led me to believe that it was the first day of that class.  The teacher spoke in a way that reminded me of someone scratching a record and rapping.  During her rap, she told students that they could set their alarm clocks and wake up at the end of class.  I thought that was very considerate of her, but then she told them that they'd have an appointment to see her in her office if they did that.  I wanted to leave, but I was having trouble fitting everything into my backpack and I couldn't find my student ID card.

"Transcripts and Crushes"    01/20/02
I stood at the front desk in the dark lobby of a college.  The woman at the desk asked if I had taken many classes that were unidentified.  I was unsure what she meant, so I replied that I had been in the International Baccalaureate program when I was in high school.  She informed me that those classes are considered unidentified.  I then told her that over half of my classes were unidentified if International Baccalaureate classes counted as such.  The people standing in a line beside me began talking to me.  I realized it was M, a guy I'd had a crush on several years ago, and one of my middle school science teachers.  I was so happy to see M.  I told him that I was on my way to lunch and he said he was also going to lunch soon and would see me later.  At lunch I saw him sitting with one of his friends, but I didn’t want to intrude, so I didn’t sit with them.  I went back to my apartment after lunch and saw that my brother was playing football with M and others on a nearby grassy area.

"Almost Lucid: Swimming in the Black Sea"    01/19/02
Several Arab men wearing loose-fitting clothing and turbans stood with me on a dock that led into the ocean.  Each of them had a rug with some kind of writing on it that I could not read.  They were dipping their rugs into the sea and letting the water from the rugs fall onto their bodies.  I realized that they were participating in a religious ceremony.  I also had a rug, so I began doing the same.  I was naked, so the water from the sea dripped directly onto my skin.  I was also very tan.  The water was extremely warm and I liked the feeling of the water dripping on me, so I decided to jump into the ocean and go swimming.  One of the men came over to me and told me not to do it, but I jumped in and swam away from the dock.  I knew that my mother would disapprove of my actions.  As I swam, I wondered what the ceremony was for.  Suddenly, I heard a loud man's voice above me say that the ceremony was performed before a young woman was sacrificed to the sea.  A whirlpool developed around me, and I began to be pulled away by the current.  I screamed, but that seemed to have no effect.  Everything was spinning and I was unsure which way to swim, which caused me to panic, but then I realized that I was dreaming and told myself to open my eyes.

"Bridesmaids on Skates"    01/18/02
I saw that F was just sitting down to eat lunch at the mall food court, although it was relatively empty.  I waved and came over to her.  For some reason I was wearing roller skates.  She set her tray down and said, "Look, it's the bride and the bridesmaids."  I turned around.  F2 was on roller skates behind me.  I realized we were the bridesmaids for F.  I felt worried because I didn't know the man F was marrying.  Her marriage seemed so sudden.  I told my friends that I would be back in a minute and went to order food.  I had trouble deciding what to order.  I finally ordered, but the food court workers were very slow making my order.

"Visiting Former Neighbors"    01/18/02
I walked from the airport to the neighborhood in which my family once lived.  I was planning to visit our former neighbors, but as I walked through the neighborhood, but I couldn't recognize their house anymore.  I had to pick it out by looking for the house I used to live in.  I walked down their driveway and rang the doorbell.  Their son answered the door as I was struggling with a baseball hat I was wearing that said NY on it.  I gave the son a hug but discovered quickly that he was very wet.  I debated whether he had been in the shower or if he had been working out.  He introduced me to his grandmother who seemed to be upset that I was wearing a hat.  I took it off and explained that my hair was very frizzy today.  She appeared to be very old and very bitter.  The son took me upstairs and told his sister I had arrived.  His sister looked at me and slammed her door.  After such an unpleasant reception we went to his room.  My brother was now with me.  There was a giant bin of stuffed animals which led to a conversation about how my stuffed animals only speak English and do not make animal noises.  I felt so uncomfortable being in this house.  I wondered where the mother and father were.

"A Movie and Shopping with Friends"    01/17/02
My mother and I were at a mall very late at night.  We had each invited a friend to go with us to see a movie at 11:00 p.m.  We walked around the mall a little, but then my friend Karen insisted on spending a very long time in one juniors clothing store.  Some other girls in the store began talking to me about possible outfit combinations.  They really annoyed me because they reminded me of high-pressure sales clerks.  I tried on one of the outfits, but I disliked it.  Finally, Karen said she was finished shopping.  She said we should go to the movie, but I mentioned that it was past 11:00, so the four of us wouldn't be able to sit together.  She said the theater wouldn't be so crowded, but I reminded her that it was a Saturday night.  My mother's friend said it was Karen's fault that we couldn't go to the movie.  I didn't really mind because the movie didn't seem that appealing to me.

"The Zoo"    01/17/02
My mother, father, and I went to the library.  We had invited my brother, but he said he didn't want to go because he had a date that night.  I was looking for books that I needed to read for a research project.  When we got to the library, My mother and I separated from my father and my mother reminded me that my father sometimes becomes impatient, so I should choose my books quickly.  I went to one of the upper floors to look for a book.  I had to walk up many narrow flights of stairs that were outside of the building.  There was no railing or barrier on the sides of the stairs to prevent people from falling off the stairs and into the street below.  I passed several girls who were coming down the stairs.  I felt terrified that one of us would fall as they passed me.  I explained to one of them that I'm terrified of heights.  Eventually I went back into the library.  My mother was already browsing through books on that floor and a library worker was helping her find specific books.  I told my mother that I was disappointed that we never wrote a thank you letter to the person who helped us the last time we went to the library.  The next floor up was a family's apartment.  My mother left to go to the restroom which was at the top of the stairs on the next floor.  I walked up there with her and saw M's father standing in a room at the end of the hall.  He looked like he was in the middle of an important business meeting.  In order to avoid bothering him I looked for the section of the apartment with books, but I couldn't find it.  Suddenly I saw my friend M.  He said that his father was making the workers take the books out of the apartment and store them somewhere else.  I thought that must be sad.  I invited my M to go running with me and he said that sounded fun.  As we stood there, I saw another male friend M2 entering one of the rooms with red roses and chocolates in his hands.  I assumed he was trying to win over some girl who wasn't interested in him.  M said he would meet me later.  I went back downstairs with my mother.  As we walked down the front steps of the library another friend, Ursula, came up to me.  She said it had been a long time since we'd seen each other.  She invited herself to go running with me.  We began running, but Ursula and my mother ran very far ahead of me.  They crossed the street with no problems, but I was afraid of being hit by cars.  Most of the cars on the road appeared to be the same model.  My mother told me that there was a car show going on nearby.  I finally crossed the road.  Ursula morphed into one of my other female friends Karen.  She instantly began complaining.  We finally made it to my garage.  We were all avoiding stepping on wires that were across the floor.   Karen stepped on one, and it sprung her forward.  My mother had invited Karen to go with us to the library next time, even though I didn't want to invite her.  Karen complained that her mother calls the library "The Zoo".  Karen seemed to think she was too good to go to the library. She had debated whether she could roll up her jacket and stick it in her spandex running shorts.  I said it would look like she had a giant tumor on her hip.  We walked into my house.  My brother didn't seem to have a date because he was home and it looked like he was cooking something.  I realized he had a crush on Karen.  He offered her a cream cheese cube.  I rolled my eyes.  I was mortified that Karen was my brother's date.

"My Brother Loves Puppies"    01/16/02
I came home to visit my family.  My brother still lived at home, but when I arrived, only my father spoke to me.  I barely saw my mother.  My brother seemed very busy; he had about six tiny golden retriever puppies.  Fluff (my oldest cat) didn’t seem to be too happy that there were puppies everywhere, but my brother didn’t wasn’t concerned by that.  He was completely obsessed with the puppies.  They all looked the same to me, but my brother had named each one and tried to help me learn their names.  I was having great difficulty doing that.  It was late at night, so I finally decided to go to bed.  I slept in one of the guest bedrooms and realized I felt completely out of place in this house.

"Kissing a Friend at a Convenience Store"    01/16/02
My brother and I went to a convenience store in the middle of the night.  My friend M, who I hadn't seen in years was there.  I was so happy to see him.  M and I went inside while my brother remained outside the store.  Then M kissed me.  It felt so good, but I told him we had to stop because my brother would see us through the glass door of the convenience store.  For some reason the thought of that worried me.

"Beautiful Music"    01/13/02
I was in a large square room with many other people.  The ceiling was very high and there was a square glass portion of the ceiling in the center of the room.  The sun was shining brightly into the room through the glass area of the ceiling, which projected a bright square of light onto the carpet, however, the rest of the room was filled with shadows.  At the four corners of the square there were musicians playing the most beautiful music I have ever heard, although I am not sure what instruments they were playing.  In the center of the square it was very windy with fallen leaves blowing around.  I wanted to step into the center of the square, but I was afraid of the wind.  Instead, I walked around the perimeter of the square.  My brother was riding a bike packed with many of his things around the perimeter with me.  We passed my father, who was standing outside of the square.  He told my brother that he had to lower the frame on his bike.  My father said when he was a teenager he had wanted to have the frame on his bike the same way my brother had his, but he never did because it was something to be ashamed of.

"My Brother Lost a Ticket"    01/11/02
My grandmother came to the dorm where my brother and I lived.  She was a professor at the school we attended.  She gave my brother a ticket for a play that would be performed that week on campus, but my brother said that he didn't want it, so my grandmother told him to give the ticket to someone who wanted it.  The next day my brother and I came home from school together.  There was a girl waiting outside our dorm.  She said our grandmother had said we would give her a ticket to see the play.  I asked my brother to unlock our door but  he claimed he didn't have his keys.  I opened the door and invited the girl inside.  Then I told my brother to give her the ticket.  He denied ever having the ticket, so I took his wallet and searched it because I knew he had put the ticket in his wallet.  I yelled at him for being so careless and making the girl wait.  The girl left without ever getting the ticket.  My mother came over later while my brother was sleeping.  I said I was worried that he was suffering from depression.

"Going Outside with Fluff"    01/08/02
My family lived in a trailer in a rural wooded area with a nearby pond.  I went outside at night and walked around with my cat Fluff.  My family set the security alarm on our trailer, even though I was outside.  I came in one of the side door where there was no keypad for the alarm, so I had to run to the other door to try to shut off the alarm.  On the way, my father called for me to come to the garage.  He and my brother were putting something in the attic, but my father had wanted me to help.  He said that he had called for me, but they didn’t know where I was.  I told him I had been outside and quickly told him that I really needed to go and turn the alarm off, but I wasn’t sure which buttons to push.  I pushed a few buttons, but the keypad was no longer beeping, so I assumed that the alarm was off.  My father, brother, and I went to the other door.  We looked out and saw Fluff chasing an orange cat.  I told them that cat was Fluff’s friend.

"Creative Writing Evaluation"    01/08/02
Our assignment for creative writing class was to write about how we are qualified for a credit card application.  The girl sitting beside me was in the army and said she was going to use that aspect of her life to explain why she’s qualified for a credit card.  She also informed me that she was ordering a pink glitter army helmet.  I wondered if such a thing existed and wondered why the girl wasn’t demoted if she wasted resources on pink helmets.  A woman was walking around the room and evaluating our teacher.  The woman asked if she could take one of my papers.  I said yes, but I didn’t think the paper would be of much use to her.  It had various names on it with marks under the names.  I told the woman the paper was from an assignment we did in class.  I think it was how I kept score during a game we played.  I decided to write about being an attorney.  The woman read the next assignment with an example essay following it.  The writer had written about having brown hair and green eyes.  The woman asked me if I would ever write about something like that.   I said no.

"Vacation Escape"    01/08/02
Calvin and I were staying at a hotel.  We wanted to find a place in the hotel where we would not be bothered by tourists.  We walked into a hall near the room where we were staying.  Lots of people were coming into the hotel and walking through the hall, which did not afford us the peace and quiet we had wanted.  There was a nearby room with the door open and lots of people inside.  We sat on a couch beside the door and looked into the room.  An old woman carried a twin canopy bed out of the room.  Another woman tried to do the same, but the posts collapsed on her, another woman, and a man.  They were all very old.  The hotel manager came into the room to see what had happened.  Everyone seemed to ignore that Calvin and I were watching them.

"Sitcom at School"    01/07/02
Various students in my class were discussing recommendations for graduate school that the professor, F, had written for them.  Another student asked the professor to write one for him.  The professor looked annoyed and said that people needed to turn in their requests early.  The professor began teaching the lesson for that day.  The first part of the lesson was about HTML.  We later discussed how speakers in televisions work with one student suggesting that speakers are like bombs.  Everyone thought that was weird.  The professor asked if anyone had seen a specific sitcom from the ‘70s.  Many students had seen it.  Suddenly the sitcom actors were performing in the classroom, including Jim Carrey.  A young male character got his acceptance letters to college in the mail, although no one in his family thought he was smart enough to go to college.  He was accepted into a very good college and his entire family celebrated.  A female neighbor, who he had a crush on, was there.  She walked over and congratulated him and offered to make him a sandwich.  As she stood there, she poured wine into a sparkling cider bottle and then into her wine glass.  She was an alcoholic.

"Shopping in Hell"    01/05/02
I was in a bookstore in a shopping plaza, looking for a good book, but I couldn’t find one that interested me.  A guy standing several rows away looked at me and said hi.  I didn’t recognize him, but later I realized he was my friend's brother.  I hadn’t seen him since I was in high school.  Part of the reason that I didn't recognize him was that his hair was dyed blonde.  I said hi to him, but suddenly he ran out of the store.  There was a man with a radio sitting in a chair behind me.  A man’s voice on the radio told him to follow my friend's brother because this was the fourth time that he had been in the store and ran out.  They suspected him of stealing something.  I realized the man sitting in the chair was a police officer.  He refused to chase my friend's brother because he said that it was just a teenager having fun.  I walked over to a secret area of the store that was hidden.  That part of the store was behind a wall that was leaning diagonally and appeared to be floating between the floor and ceiling.  There was a man who seemed like a salesman standing there.  He described that part of the store to me.  He referred to it as hell, but I thought that it looked very beautiful and appealing.  I ran out of the store and went home because I realized that I would be suspected of stealing just because I spoke to my friend's brother.  When I got home I sat at the kitchen table with Midori, Zara, and another friend.  One of them asked my dad if he minded four women eating together.  He said our family didn’t have any rules against that, but I knew that she meant to ask if he minded us sharing food.

"Holding Hands"    01/03/02
I was in my single room in the dorms.  A friend called me on the phone, which made me feel very happy.  He asked me if I had held a specific person's hand.  I said no, but I thought it was weird that he was asking me that.  It was almost as if he was jealous of that person.  I lived with my friend Gloria.  She walked into the room and seemed happy that I was talking to my friend.  I said goodbye to my friend on the phone.  Gloria began getting ready for bed.  I went into the other room to get something, but I didn't seem to know what I was looking for.  I was glad that Gloria was home.  I knew she was a good person.

"Stalker"    01/02/02
A woman came and knocked on the front door of my parents’ house.  I didn’t answer.  Only my brother and I were home.  We were both very quiet.  I lay in bed with my eyes closed and pretended to sleep.  I knew that she would come look through the blinds on my bedroom window to see if I was sleeping or not.  I tried not to breathe as she looked at me.  I wondered why she was so interested in my life.  She left and I felt relieved that she was finally leaving me alone.

"Being Driven to School"    01/01/02
I stayed with Calvin, who lived in a different city than I.  I got into his car in the garage.  We were about to drive to school, although the city where he lived was hundreds of miles from my school.  I saw that Oscar lived a few houses away.  Oscar volunteered to drive me to school, but I politely refused.  Calvin told me he’d be right back and went into his house.  A few minutes later a blonde woman walked out of his house.  I thought she must be his cousin.  She said she would drive me to school, so we got into the car.  I was surprised that Calvin would let her drive his car.  I began to think that she might be his ex-girlfriend.  She didn’t know how to get to the university, so I gave her directions.  It only took a few minutes to get there, but I noticed we weren’t in my Calvin’s car anymore.  She dropped me off, but I became lost at school and couldn’t find my dorm.  I finally found it and checked my mail.  I realized that it was the end of winter break.  There was a glass covering over all of the mailboxes.  I lifted it up and saw that I was one of the only people who had mail.
